The Art Deco style movement began with the 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.  The term Art Deco is derived from Arts Decoratifs. The Art Deco style was prominent between 1925-1940. Art Deco was applied to painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, decoration, motifs, design, textiles, fashion, jewelry, glass art, metal art, and everyday objects. Attributes of Art Deco include:

  • Linear and geometric shapes, design, and motifs
    • Circles
    • Rectangles
    • Triangles
    • Zigzags
    • Trapezoids
    • Chevrons
    • Parallel lines
    • Sunbursts
    • Heavy geometric influences
    • Loud, vibrant, and even kitschy colors
    • Exaggerated curves
    • Hard edges
    • Stepped forms
  • Abstract shapes
  • Minimalist design
  • Repetition of shapes and lines
  • Simplicity
  • Elongated representations of people and animals
  • Specific stylized icons such as antelopes and greyhounds
  • Streamlining
