The California Department of Transportation has designated the intersection of highways 41 and 46 near Cholame, California, as the James Dean Memorial Junction.

Cult actor James Dean met his demise in a traffic accident at the intersection of California Highways 41 and 46 on September 30, 1955 at 5:59pm. Dean was driving his Porsche 550 Spyder en route to a race in Salinas on October 1. Dean's Porsche was struck by a 1954 Ford Tudor driven by Donald Turnupseed. The glare of the setting sun greatly reduced visibility at the intersection, especially for the approaching Ford.

James Dean was traveling with his racing mechanic Rolf Wutherich. James Dean's last words were "He has to see us." James Dean was killed instantly in the accident. Donald Turnupseed and Rolf Wutherich survived the accident with relatively minor injuries.

There is a James Dean Memorial at the nearby Jack Ranch Cafe.
